Are you connecting with every student by covering all the styles of personality and communication in your teaching? As educators, we all have our strengths and best ways of communicating. We also have a good idea that we need to reach out to others who process and decide things very differently. Covering four areas of preferences will reveal the needs of each style and how we can flex to include everyone in the room. Your students will feel more understood, find increased clarity and better understand your lessons. 1. Language: English. Narrator: uncredited. The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. is an American English writing style guide. It is one of the best-known and most influential prescriptive treatments of English grammar and usage, and often is required reading in US high school and university composition classes. The original 1918 edition of The Elements of Style detailed eight elementary rules of usage, 10 elementary principles of composition, a few matters of form, and a list of commonly ´´misused´´ words and expressions. This book, printed as a private edition in 1918 for the use of his students, became a classic on the local campus, known as ´´the little book´´, and its successive editions have since sold over 10 million copies. This version is based on the public-domain text from 1918, which was originally uploaded to Wikibooks and wikified by Wikibooks: User: Lord Emsworth in 2003. 1. Language: English. This book aims to give in brief space the principal requirements of plain English style. It aims to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention (in chapters 2 and 3) on a few essentials, the rules of usage, and principles of composition most commonly violated. In accordance with this plan it lays down three rules for the use of the comma, instead of a score or more, and one for the use of the semicolon, in the belief that these four rules provide for all the internal punctuation that is required by 19 sentences out of 20. Similarly, it gives in chapter 3 only those principles of the paragraph and the sentence which are of the widest application. The book thus covers only a small portion of the field of English style. The experience of its writer has been that once past the essentials, students profit most by individual instruction based on the problems of their own work, and that each instructor has his own body of theory, which he may prefer to that offered by any textbook. 1. Styles of Radical Will, Susan Sontag´s second collection of essays, extends the investigations she undertook in Against Interpretation with essays on film, literature, politics, and a groundbreaking study of pornography. In ´´The Aesthetics of Silence´´, Sontag examines how silence mediates the role of art as a form of spirituality in an increasingly secular culture. ´´The Pornographic Imagination´´ attempts to define and understand the genre of pornography. ´´What´s Happening in America´´ muses on the state of the country in 1966, when the essay was written, discussing history, politics, and consumerism. Other essays in Styles of Radical Will are ´´Thinking Against Oneself: Reflections on Cioran´´, ´´Theatre and Film´´, ´´Bergman´s Persona´´, ´´Godard´´, and ´´Trip to Hanoi´´. 1. Language: English.
